Kai Tak Nostalgia Restored: All Aviation Enthusiasts Can Be Happy About Checkerboard Hill Restoration

Hong Kong can be such a busy place that you can go whole months without realising that something significant has changed in the city environment. Such is the case with the recent news that someone in government has seen to the restoration of the Kai Tak Checkerboard just in front of Lion Rock.  Just last year, if you had looked at the old faded rock, you would not have known that pilots landing on Runway 13 would have used that for their signal to take manual control and descend and turn right into the airport.  I have actually noticed a lot of these projects happening in Hong Kong during Covid19. Many once-derelict pavements and overpasses have taken on a new sheen.  Even next to my house you can see an entire promenade (I will post pictures later) has been erected where there was once just a small walking path and some weeds. Now you can see places to sit, places to lock up your bike and many statues to pose with along the seaside.  It's good to see because it mak...

Hong Kong, JFK, LAX, SFO, MAN, Malta, TPE

That's my travel schedule for the next two months. I'm on my third Budweiser this evening, and eating a bunch of peaches my wife cut up for me. I found some old blogs that I had set up with every intention of writing in them. It turns out that life had other plans for me. I never ever returned to them, and some of these blogs are 12 years old. Amazing that I could stumble upon them and just start writing again. But where was I? I will be visiting seven different airports this summer as we fly around taking students on field trips, visiting the United Kingdom to buy a house and traveling to Malta to take some sun and relax and refrain from mobile devices for at least a week. And then it's on to Taipei, where I start a new job in September, working for a venture fund that runs an accelerator called AppWorks. I'm not sure right now why blogging seems so appealing to me suddenly, but I'll tell you briefly why I started this blog in... checks calendar... 2011??? ...

Bing Drives Map Search Traffic Towards Internal Layouts of Buildings

Image
This is exactly the kind of thing we need. Bing is putting more airport maps in its search database . But the great news is not that there are maps. Plenty of other web services offer this. What's interesting for a traveler like me is that you can look up a flight number and instantly go to the map as you plan your trip . The last time I was in an airport, I had to ask the gate agent how to get to Terminal D. He snapped at me, "Can't you see I'm busy?" No, I had not noticed that. He was standing there with a clipboard with the gate announcements on it, waiting for people to ask him questions. Bing, the Microsoft search engine, has interrupted that customer service duty by offering maps for 42 American airports for the mobile. More like airport layouts. Here's a screenshot. Never get lost in Denver again!

ABC News Installs News Bureau at Chinese University

Coming to a Chinese university campus near you: ABC News. Seems that the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong, China just inked the world's first deal to have ABC News station a broadcasting bureau on the campus. The deal will allow "roving" Asia reporters to pitch stories directly to ABC News in a deal very similar to what ABC News has going on with six US universities. Received this email from Ying Chan at University of Hong Kong: The American Broadcasting Company cooperates with six US universities already to provide online and on-air news. HKU’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre is the first international branch of the venture. Director of the Broadcasting Programme at the JMSC, Jim Laurie, who worked at ABC for more than twenty years, has compiled a team of thirteen students to take part. MJ student Zela Chin and BJ student Liyi Chen will coordinate the project here in Hong Kong and are in charge of pitching ideas to the commissioning editor in New York, Christina...

Kate Dourian Middle East Editor, Platts Flight leg from Abu Dhabi to Cairo This post contains a picture from the Cairo airport, but not Abu Dhabi. Kate writes: I just flew from Abu Dhabi – first time in years – and it was a great experience. Flew into the usual chaos in Cairo. Sadly, I forgot to take a photo at Abu Dhabi but I did take one chaotic photo at Cairo airport. Now if I can only figure out how to send it from my Blackberry we are all set. 1. What is the name of the airport, what time of day is it, and where in the airport are you located? Abu Dhabi airport in Abu Dhabi. If you travel in business or first class, they will send a limo to pick you up wherever you are, even from Dubai or other emirates. The check-in process was very smooth and security is good though not excessively so. 2. What are the most amazing and helpful amenities at this airport? The public areas are very bright and airy. There is an open business center with computer screens available quite close to the g...
